I woke up exhausted, wearing yesterday's clothes (apart from my snowboots and bedsocks, which I have learned make MUCH more practical gig shoes than Vans with height increasers and normal socks), probably completely confused Bebe as I had no idea what I was talking about, being half-awake an' all ....
Despite all that, I had the most amazing night out that I have had this year, and the best British road trip that I have had since - erm, I don't know.
I sat in a car, fagless, for around two and a half hours, every second of that worth it, for two hours or so standing next to a pole on a balcony. Again, all worth it. The best bits were when they played "Lullaby", the song that got me into them (a bit of it sounds freakishly like the James song of the same name), plus Andy's talking surrounding it - getting drunk in Scotland and strange girls in Hamburg, very funny - and the beginning of the encore, when Andy played half of "Caves" solo. But there was no bum note, except maybe when Andy played the piano with his feet, that was a bit weird. Second best band that I have ever seen, James being first.
A Jack's Mannequin gig is much more like seeing James than, say, seeing You Me At Six (whom I saw three nights before). YMAS, it's all about the screaming and the jumping around and the fit lead vocalist showing off his legs, way more about having a fun night out than the actual music. Jack's Mannequin, like James, you book your tickets because you want to see a talented band. Not that I don't like You Me At Six, of course I think they're brill, but I'd say that they have more "potential" than "talent". Also, YMAS' setlist was almost identical to the tracklisting of their album, what's that all about!?
Onward with the night. After the gig, we drove around aimlessly for a while (there's a reason why people only seem to walk or use public transport in London), then gave up for a bit and stopped to get some chips from a 24-hour takeaway. After the chips, we finally made it to the M1, my dad drove like he was trying to be top of the list on Top Gear's "Star In A Reasonably Priced Car" list (I love fast driving), and we got home at about 1am.
